FC Augsburg’s latest signing is Brazilian left-back Iago. The 22 year-old former SC Internacional player has made the move to Europe to play in the Bundesliga and signed a five year deal with the Fuggerstädter. The Brazilian season only takes place over the course of a calendar year, unlike in Germany. In the 2018 Brazilian Série A season, Iago made 35 appearances for Internacional and provided two assists. The Porto Alegre club finished the season in third place, securing a place in the 2019 Copa Libertadores. So far in the 2019 season, Iago has featured in five of Internacional’s first nine matches. In the Copa Libertadores, the South American Champions League, Iago helped Internacional top their group which featured defending champions River Plate. Iago featured in all six matches of the group stage before finalising his move to Augsburg. Internacional’s Copa Libertadores take on Chilean side Club Nacional in the round of 16, with the first leg taking place on Thursday, 25th July. “I’m thrilled to receive the chance to prove myself in one of the best leagues in the world!” – Iago The left-back has also been a part of the Brazil U23s setup since the start of this month. Iago has already won the first title of his international career, helping Brazil U22s win the annual Maurice Revello Tournament in Toulon, France. Brazil won the final on penalties against Japan. Attentions for Iago will now turn to Olympic qualification with the U23s ahead of next summer’s games in Tokyo. Challenge of playing in the Bundesliga The move to FC Augsburg is a dream come true for Iago. The Brazilian will wear the number 22 shirt from next season for the Fuggerstädter. He hopes to become a key part of the Augsburg defence. “FC Augsburg had declared an interest in me from an early stage and made every effort to make a transfer happen. I’m thrilled to receive the chance to prove myself in one of the best leagues in the world,” said a proud Iago following the finalisation of his transfer. Welcome to Augsburg, Iago!
