FC Augsburg looked to be on track to take home a point from Leipzig on Saturday afternoon, before a late own goal ultimately led to a 2-1 defeat.
Head coach Manuel Baum made two changes to his starting line-up following last weekend's 2-0 home win against Köln. Alexis Claude-Maurice was absent due to personal reasons, as Dimitris Giannoulis made his return from an Achilles tendon issue. Arthur Chaves replaced the suspended Cédric Zesiger in defence.
FCA arrived in Leipzig with plenty of confidence, having won each of their last three matches, and seeking to put an end to their six-game losing run at the Red Bull Arena. The hosts controlled the match from the start, with Antonio Nusa proving difficult to keep quiet on the wings. Christoph Baumgartner was able to get off a shot following a free kick in the sixth minute, but his effort went just wide of the right post.
Augsburg did well to withstand Leipzig's early pressure, managing to consistently create chances of their own. Their best chance arose in the 21st minute, as Mert Kömür's shot hit Baumgartner's elbow inside the box, with the referee pointing to the spot following a VAR review. Keven Schlotterbeck stepped up to take it, but saw his effort parried at the bottom right corner by Maarten Vandevoordt (22'). Seven minutes later, Yan Diomande tested Finn Dahmen with a shot at the other end, which the FCA keeper was able to keep out.
Giannoulis then played a ball through to Fabian Rieder in the 39th minute, with the Swiss attacker laying it off for Robin Fellhauer. The 28-year-old finished his effort from just inside the box to give FCA a 1-0 lead just before the break.
Shortly after the restart, Rieder was able to go close twice in quick succession, but saw both attempts saved by Vandevoordt before the linesman's flag went up (50'). RBL's Baumgartner then had an effort parried by Dahmen (51'). Nine minutes later, Giannoulis forced Vandevoordt into making a save, with the rebound dropping to Anton Kade. The half-time substitute met his match in the form of the Leipzig goalkeeper, however.
The hosts continued to press forward, with Castello Lukeba heading the ball onto the post following a corner in the 67th minute. Shortly after, Diomande's shot was deflected into the side netting. Dahmen was at the forefront of the action on several occasions, making a strong save to deny Rômulo in the 73rd minute. The hosts were then able to draw level in the 76th minute, as Diomande drove into the box before slotting past Dahmen from around 10 metres out.
There was to be more late drama at the Red Bull Arena. Rodrigo Ribeiro found himself through on goal in the 83rd minute, chipping the ball over the on-rushing Vandevoordt. Agonisingly for the striker, he had to watch as his effort rebounded back into play off the far post. Baum then introduced academy product Tim Schnitzer, handing the youngster his Bundesliga debut as Noahkai Banks exited the pitch (84'). Dahmen then made a strong save to deny Conrad Harder in the closing stages (86').
With just a few minutes left to play, it seemed as though Augsburg would manage to take home at least a point from Leipzig. It wasn't to be, however, as a cross from David Raum was inadvertently turned in by Chaves from close range, giving the hosts a 2-1 lead in the 92nd minute. Augsburg threw everything forward in the final minutes of injury time, with Dahmen nearly heading in a set piece before the referee whistled for full time.
Next weekend, FC Augsburg travel to face Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, 14th March (15:30 CEST).
