Maaßen: “We wanted to take our chance"

Post-match reaction from the 2-1 win in Leverkusen

FC Augsburg won 2-1 at Bayer 04 Leverkusen in their first away game of the season, the club’s first ever victory against the Werkself. Both the head coach and his players were delighted after the final whistle.

Rafał Gikiewicz: “We wanted to show what we’re really about today after the 4-0 loss to Freiburg. We’re happy to have won 2-1. There was obviously some luck involved as Leverkusen had a lot of chances, but it was a great team performance. It was brilliant that André Hahn could score the winner on his birthday. He started on the bench but made an impact once coming on. That’s what makes our team special.”

Fredrik Jensen: “We were delighted after the final whistle after securing our first ever win against Leverkusen. The win will do us the world of good after a disappointing defeat last week. This victory will give us some real positives and hopefully we can build some momentum now.”

André Hahn: “Getting a first win against Leverkusen is such a great feeling. I’m very relieved that the goal counted in the end and will certainly drink a beer to that tonight. You can’t ask for a better birthday present. I had a good conversation with the coach during the week and I knew that I wouldn’t be starting. It makes it all worthwhile that his plan came good.”

Gerardo Seoane: “Congratulations to FC Augsburg on the win. We had enough opportunities to score, but we were too wasteful. FCA disturbed our rhythm well – we weren’t able to keep the tempo up throughout the match. It’s hard to find an explanation when you miss as many chances as we did today, but sometimes you just have those days.”

Enrico Maaßen: “This was our first ever win over Leverkusen so we’re absolutely delighted. We were up against a very good team, but we wanted to be bold, and I think you saw that in the first half. The first 25 minutes were really good. Leverkusen began to take control after that, albeit without having any clear-cut chances. They did have some massive opportunities after the break though, but we had the necessary luck, a brilliant goalkeeper and sheer determination. We had the sense that today offered us a real opportunity; we wanted to take advantage of that moment as it’s the kind of thing that can carry you through the season.”
