FCA beaten 3-2 in Bremen after letting two-goal lead slip

FC Augsburg suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday afternoon, going down 3-2 away to SV Werder Bremen. Manuel Baum’s side had been 2-0 up before the hosts turned the game around.

Baum made just one change to the starting XI that began the 2-2 draw with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, with academy graduate Mert Kömür replacing new signing Arijon Ibrahimović. The rest of the squad was unchanged from the previous week.

FCA wore their new third kit for the first time in front of 39,745 spectators and looked to get on the front foot early on. The first chance fell to Bremen, though, as Finn Dahmen got a hand to Chuki’s free kick and turned it onto the post (6’). The game settled into an evenly matched contest from there, with little to separate the sides.

Bremen looked to find a way through a compact FCA defence, but it was Augsburg who took the lead with a swift counter. Fabian Rieder’s pass cut straight through the Bremen back line and released Robin Fellhauer, who kept his composure with two defenders chasing him to make it 1-0 (18’). The hosts responded by pushing for an equaliser, but Dahmen twice denied Füllkrug (29’, 42’) to preserve FCA’s slender advantage going into the break.

Brackelmann marks Bundesliga debut with a goal

Bremen came out looking for a quick equaliser after the restart, but FCA continued to keep them at bay. Baum then introduced Alexis Claude-Maurice, Yannick Keitel and Rodrigo Ribeiro, and the changes soon had an impact. Karl Hein kept out Claude-Maurice’s effort from distance, but the Bremen goalkeeper was beaten from the resulting corner as Brackelmann flicked home Claude-Maurice’s delivery to make it 2-0 (58’) – his first Bundesliga goal for FCA.

The momentum then swung sharply in Bremen’s favour. Marco Grüll pulled one back (66’), before Füllkrug and Weiser both went close to levelling the scores soon afterwards. FCA were forced deeper as the hosts stepped up the pressure, although Baum’s side still looked dangerous when they were able to break forward.

Bremen eventually found the equaliser in the 86th minute, Füllkrug drilling a powerful shot home from 16 yards. There was an even more painful blow to come for FCA in added time. With Bremen continuing to pile forward, Mitchell Weiser struck in the third minute of stoppage time (90’+3) to complete the comeback and hand Augsburg their first defeat of the campaign.

FCA are back in action after the three-week international break on Saturday, 10th October (15:30 CEST), when German record champions FC Bayern München visit the WWK ARENA for the Bavarian derby.
