Hosts play final 25 minutes with ten men
FC Augsburg played out a hard-fought draw with Hamburger SV on Easter Saturday. Arthur Chaves was on target in the first half for FCA.
Manuel Baum made four changes to his starting eleven from the home match against Stuttgart last time out, as Arthur Chaves, Marius Wolf, Anton Kade and Michael Gregoritsch all came in. Jeffrey Gouweleeuw returned to the squad after recovering from injury. However, Kristijan Jakić was unavailable after picking up a knock on international duty.
Right from kick-off, FCA were well organised, put the hosts under pressure and repeatedly looked to threaten the HSV goal in a breathless start to the game. The Fuggerstädter were also solid defensively and their alert backline, led by captain Keven Schlotterbeck, conceded few chances early on.
In the 22nd minute, FCA got their reward for a strong start. Marius Wolf played a dangerous cross into the middle after Fabian Rieder’s free kick from deep. Cédric Zesiger headed the ball on to Arthur Chaves, who turned it home to put the visitors ahead.
The match remained lively after the opening goal. While FCA maintained their focused performance, the Rothosen posed a danger, particularly from their quick counterattacks. FCA goalkeeper Finn Dahmen made several saves to deny the likes of Miro Muheim and Philip Otele and made sure that Manuel Baum’s side held on to their deserved lead at half time.
FCA were unchanged at the start of the second period and immediately looked to pick up where they left off. Despite this, the first opportunity of the half fell to the hosts. Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer let fly from a promising position, but his shot went narrowly wide of goal. At the other end, FCA continued to threaten, including through Anton Kade and Alexis Claude-Maurice.
In the 60th minute, however, HSV found their equaliser. After Augsburg lost the ball in midfield, Königsdörffer fired in a first-time effort from just outside the box. Only a few minutes after the equaliser, Miro Muheim brought down Anton Kade on the edge of the area after the FCA man had found himself through on goal. Referee Deniz Aytekin adjudged that Muheim had denied an obvious goalscoring opportunity and pulled out the red card (65’).
With this man advantage, FCA started to control the game more and more and forced HSV deep into their own half. Their biggest opportunity to retake the lead came in the 74th minute when Robin Fellhauer played in Marius Wolf out wide. Wolf’s cross into the centre was met by Gregoritsch, who was unlucky to see his effort come back off the post.
The hosts, though, remained dangerous even with ten men. In the latter stages, Finn Dahmen was called into action on multiple occasions and prevented FCA from falling behind. Not long after, there was another nervous moment in the Augsburg box as VAR checked for a possible handball by Cédric Zesiger. However, Aytekin reviewed the footage and decided to allow the game to continue. A hard-fought and tightly contested clash finished 1-1 at the Volksparkstadion.
FC Augsburg are in Bundesliga action again on Friday, 10th April as they welcome TSG Hoffenheim to the WWK ARENA (20:30 CEST).
