Second-half goalfest as FCA beat Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1

FC Augsburg made it six points from their first two matches with a 4-1 win away to Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday evening. After falling behind early on, FCA produced a superb second-half display to secure another victory.

Arijon Ibrahimović was immediately named in the starting lineup. The new signing from FC Bayern München replaced the injured Anton Kade in the XI, with FCA head coach Manuel Baum otherwise naming the same side that began the Bundesliga opener against Schalke 04. Fabian Rieder once again captained the team.

In warm conditions in Frankfurt, Eintracht made the brighter start and took the lead after just five minutes. Younes Ebnoutalib delivered a cross into the box, and Jonathan Burkardt headed home at the far post to make it 1-0. Frankfurt had a golden opportunity to double their advantage just a few minutes later, but Finn Dahmen reacted sharply to deny Can Uzun inside the penalty area (12’).

The Fuggerstädter gradually grew into the game and began to pose a threat themselves. Hennes Behrens had FCA’s first opportunity, seeing an effort from the left of the area deflected behind for a corner. Eintracht soon regained control, however, and continued to threaten with a number of efforts from promising positions. Shortly before the interval, Dahmen once again kept his side in the game with an excellent stop to deny the unmarked Ebnoutalib (40’). This ensured that Frankfurt went into the break with only a slender lead.

Quickfire double after half time

FCA made the perfect start to the second half. On his debut for the club, Ibrahimović levelled almost immediately after the restart, heading in Marius Wolf’s cross to make it 1-1 (46’). And FCA weren’t finished there. Just a minute later, they had turned the game on its head, with Ibrahimović again heavily involved. Noah Atubolu was unable to hold the 20-year-old's shot, and Robin Fellhauer was on hand to tuck away the rebound from close range (47’).

The game remained open and fast-paced. Dahmen raced out to make a vital intervention against the onrushing Burkardt at one end (50’), before Atubolu produced a fine save to keep out Michael Gregoritsch at the other (58’). Baum made his first changes in the 61st minute, introducing Mert Kömür and Alexis Claude-Maurice in place of goalscorers Ibrahimović and Fellhauer. Claude-Maurice made an immediate impact. Just a few minutes after coming on, he curled a superb effort from the left side of the box into the far corner to extend FCA’s lead (65’).

Eintracht pushed forward again in the closing stages, but FCA defended resolutely while continuing to threaten at the other end. Fabian Rieder then wrapped up the victory in the 89th minute, sending a superb free kick into the top corner to make it 4-1 to the visitors.

The result means FC Augsburg finish a Bundesliga matchday top of the table for the first time in their 16 seasons in the top flight. The Fuggerstädter are back at the WWK ARENA next Saturday for their second home game of the campaign, when Baum’s side welcome Bayer Leverkusen at 15:30 CEST.
