FC Augsburg drew 1-1 with Eintracht Frankfurt on matchday 31 of the Bundesliga. Anton Kade put the home side ahead, but Frankfurt substitute Ritsu Doan hit back in the second half.
FCA head coach Manuel Baum made one change to his starting line-up from last weekend’s 2-1 away win in Leverkusen. Michael Gregoritsch replaced Rodrigo Ribeiro in attack after missing the previous match due to illness. Centre-back Chrislain Matsima returned to the squad for the first time after recovering from a torn tendon in his left thigh, while Yannik Keitel was also included again following his injury.
Before kick-off, the WWK ARENA paid tribute to former FCA goalkeeper Alexander Manninger, who recently passed away in a tragic car accident. Once the match got under way, Augsburg started brightly and repeatedly put the visitors under pressure with their high-intensity play. However, much of the game took place in midfield, where both sides battled for control and second balls. Clearcut chances were few and far between at first.
Kade puts FCA ahead
Augsburg remained focused and patiently created the decisive moment. Shortly before half-time, Alexis Claude-Maurice cleverly flicked a backheel on to Fabian Rieder. The Swiss midfielder delivered a perfectly timed pass forward, where Anton Kade laid the ball off first time to Michael Gregoritsch. His effort struck the post, but Kade reacted quickly, followed up and found the net to give FCA a 1-0 lead at the break.
In the second half, Frankfurt upped the pressure and pushed hard for an equaliser. Can Uzun in particular found himself in promising positions twice shortly after the restart (48’, 51’). The Fuggerstädter, however, continued to battle. From a corner, Gregoritsch flicked the ball on with his head, but it once again hit the post (54’).
At the other end, Frankfurt thought they had equalised in the 58th minute. After a long ball from Robin Koch, Arnaud Kalimuendo rounded Finn Dahmen and slotted home. However, the visitors’ celebrations were cut short as the flag was raised for offside.
Doan levels the match
Shortly afterwards, Augsburg threatened again. Following an excellent lay-off from Claude-Maurice, Han-Noah Massengo unleashed a powerful shot, which narrowly missed the target. Then the visitors finally struck. Substitute Ritsu Doan was played in on the right-hand side of the penalty area, kept his composure before precisely placing the ball into the far corner to make it 1-1 (66’).
Both sides pushed for a winner and continued to attack with intent, creating further opportunities. However, neither team could apply the finishing touch in the decisive moments. The match at the WWK ARENA therefore ended in a hard-fought draw between two neighbouring sides in the table.
The result confirms that FC Augsburg will play in the Bundesliga for the 16th consecutive season. Next up for Manuel Baum’s side is a trip to Werder Bremen on Saturday, 2nd May (15:30 CEST).
