Wagner: “We’re looking forward to the atmosphere at the Millerntor”
FCA away to St. Pauli
With the international break out of the way, FC Augsburg prepare to head north for their next Bundesliga fixture. Sandro Wagner’s side take on FC St. Pauli at the Millerntor on Sunday (15:30 CEST).
The free weekend gave the players and coaching staff a “small reset” after some intense weeks, something Wagner says “did everyone good.” Attention has now fully shifted to preparations for St. Pauli. Wagner is relishing the trip: “We can’t wait to play at St. Pauli on Sunday – it’s an absolute highlight for us. We’re looking forward to the atmosphere at the Millerntor and we hope it’s really loud.”
His team “really pushed hard in training yesterday and today” and will travel to Hamburg well prepared. St. Pauli are in fine form, following up a thrilling 3-3 draw with Borussia Dortmund by winning the Hamburg derby 2-0 against HSV. FCA, meanwhile, beat Freiburg 3-1 on the opening day before a narrow 3-2 defeat to Bayern Munich, a match in which they produced a brave performance.
Schlotterbeck and Giannoulis ruled out
There are still a few question marks on the personnel front ahead of the weekend. Mert Kömür, who scored the equaliser in February’s 1-1 draw at St. Pauli, is back in training after breaking his toe, but his involvement will be a late call, as will that of Marius Wolf, Robin Fellhauer and Alexis Claude-Maurice, who also returned to training this week. FCA will definitely be without Keven Schlotterbeck and Dimitris Giannoulis, who are both sidelined with injuries.
New signings Ismaël Gharbi and Fabian Rieder could make their debuts. Asked about Rieder, who helped Switzerland to two victories during the international break, Wagner commented: “He played well for the national team, he’s in top shape and really eager. Now we just need to see whether we can find a spot for him.” Around 1,300 travelling FCA fans will provide support in Hamburg, with the away end at the Millerntor sold out.
