FC Augsburg claimed their second home win of the season on matchday 11, taking three valuable points against Hamburger SV at the WWK ARENA. Anton Kade scored the decisive goal in the 1-0 victory.
Mert Kömür returned to the starting line-up compared to the away game in Stuttgart prior to the international break. Sandro Wagner, however, was without captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (medial ligament surgery) and his deputy Kristijan Jakić (ankle problems).
Backed by a sold-out crowd, FCA started brightly and dominated the opening half-hour – only the finishing touch was missing. Inside five minutes, Mert Kömür and Anton Kade combined brilliantly in the box, but HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes came out on top in the one-on-one. In the eighth minute, the ball was in the net when Fabian Rieder fired in what looked like the opener, only for it to be ruled out for a marginal offside.
Augsburg stayed on the front foot and continued to apply pressure. Hamburg threatened for the first time through a Miro Muheim free-kick that curled just wide of the right post. The visitors then broke dangerously in the 17th minute after FCA lost the ball high up the pitch – Ransford Königsdörffer struck the post, but the flag was already up.
In the 23rd minute, Dimitris Giannoulis powered through well down the left, only for Heuer Fernandes to deny him again. Keven Schlotterbeck (34’) and then Nicolás Capaldo (38’) were booked, before HSV created one last chance before the break: a cleared ball fell to Königsdörffer, but Chrislain Matsima cleared off the line.
Kade scores his first of the season – Schlotterbeck sent off
The second half began more cautiously. HSV registered the first real chance when Jean-Luc Dompé latched onto a vertical pass from Jordan Torunarigha on the left and squared for Giorgi Gocholeishvili, whose effort from 12 yards lacked power. In the 52nd minute, Han-Noah Massengo burst into the right side of the box but was also denied by Heuer Fernandes.
With the score still goalless, Sandro Wagner introduced attacking options in Samuel Essende and Elias Saad (65’). The decisive moment arrived in the 76th minute: Giannoulis surged down the left and delivered a high cross to the far post, where Anton Kade met it first time to fire in a deserved 1-0 lead. It was the summer signing’s first competitive goal in FCA colours.
Moments later, Schlotterbeck brought down Königsdörffer on the touchline to halt a quick counter and was shown a second yellow card. FCA had to see out the closing stages with ten men, but defended with real determination to secure their second home win of the campaign.
