Kade on target with a header, Rexhbecaj falls just short
International break update
Anton Kade had reason to celebrate with Germany’s U21s, while Elvis Rexhbecaj and Kosovo narrowly missed out on a place at the World Cup. Here is how the FCA players got on during the international break.
Anton Kade and Mert Kömür both started for Germany U21s in their European Championship qualifier against Greece, and the two FCA youngsters both impressed. Kade made it 2-0 in the 73rd minute with a fine header, while Kömür played the full 90 minutes. The win now has Germany on top of their qualifying group.
For Elvis Rexhbecaj, meanwhile, the dream of reaching the World Cup came to an end. The 28-year-old was on the pitch until the 80th minute in Kosovo’s play-off final against Turkey, but his side were narrowly beaten 1-0. That meant Kosovo missed out on what would have been the first World Cup appearance in their history.
There were also several friendlies on the schedule: Fabian Rieder played until the 73rd minute in Switzerland’s 0-0 draw with Norway. Michael Gregoritsch came off the bench in Austria’s 1-0 win over South Korea, while Ismaël Gharbi was introduced in the 70th minute in Tunisia’s 0-0 draw with Canada.
Kristijan Jakić did not feature in Croatia’s 2-1 defeat to Brazil, Dimitris Giannoulis was unused in Greece’s 0-0 draw with Hungary and Finn Dahmen also remained on the bench in Germany’s 2-1 win over Ghana. Rodrigo Ribeiro, meanwhile, came on in the 58th minute of Portugal U21’s 3-0 win over Scotland in European Championship qualifying, picking up more international minutes in the process.
Mbuku qualifies for the World Cup
Nathanaël Mbuku, who is currently out on loan at Montpellier, helped DR Congo qualify for the World Cup thanks to a 1-0 win in extra time against Jamaica.
