Baum: “We’re working to make our play more consistent”

Three important fixtures await FC Augsburg in an intense week, beginning with the home game against 1. FC Union Berlin at the WWK ARENA on Saturday (15:30 CEST). An away match against SG Sonnenhof Großaspach in the DFB-Pokal then follows in midweek, before FCA welcome SC Freiburg the following Saturday.
Augsburg are looking to quickly get back on track following their 4-3 defeat in a goal-filled clash with SV Elversberg. FCA sit tenth in the Bundesliga despite the recent loss. Union Berlin, currently 17th in the table, travel to Augsburg having kept two clean sheets in their last two matches.
Ahead of matchday seven of the Bundesliga, FCA head coach Manuel Baum believes there is still room for improvement, particularly in terms of his team’s consistency. “We’re working hard on these areas to make our play more consistent over the full 90 minutes,” explained the coach. Whilst their last match was certainly entertaining, his team gave up too many opportunities. “It can be really enjoyable to watch our matches because there’s always something happening. But, overall, in Elversberg, there was simply too much drama,” said Baum. Alongside Leverkusen and Leipzig, FCA currently boast the league’s joint second-best attack, having found the net 16 times.
An opponent with obvious strengths
In Union Berlin, Augsburg are facing a team who focus primarily on intensity and physical presence. Baum therefore expects this to be a challenging game. “Union are a physically strong and determined side who are dangerous from set pieces. We need to adapt to that whilst also seeing how we can utilise our own strengths on the pitch,” explained the FCA manager. His team still need to improve, particularly when it comes to decision-making.
Steve Mounié and Noahkai Banks remain sidelined. Saturday’s fixture also comes too soon for Alexis Claude-Maurice, who has recently made a partial return to team training. The rest of the squad are available for selection.
