Fastest goal in Bundesliga history

Robin Fellhauer has written his name into the Bundesliga record books with a remarkable goal. In FC Augsburg’s 2-2 draw with FC Bayern München on Saturday afternoon, the 28-year-old scored after just 8.4 seconds – the fastest goal in Bundesliga history.

Bayern took the kick-off and immediately looked to play the ball long into the Augsburg half through goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. However, the Bayern captain took a heavy touch, and Fellhauer reacted in a flash. He pounced on the mistake and suddenly had a clear run at goal. After taking one more touch to steady himself, he calmly rolled the ball into the empty net to give FCA an early lead.

The goal saw Fellhauer surpass the previous record jointly held by Karim Bellarabi and Kevin Volland, who had both found the net after nine seconds. The Augsburg midfielder shaved just over half a second off that mark.

A lightning start that was no accident

Fellhauer revealed after the game that there had been a clear plan behind Augsburg’s flying start. “We spoke before the game about exactly how Bayern might take the kick-off,” he said. “For it to work out like that makes it even better. I was able to take one more touch and then put it away.”

The emotions were understandably running high after the final whistle. “It’s hard to put into words,” said Fellhauer. “To be part of something so special and now hold the record with that goal is an incredible moment.”

Curiously, the fastest own goal in Bundesliga history also came in a game between FC Augsburg and FC Bayern Munich. On matchday 22 of the 2018/19 season, Bayern’s Leon Goretzka put through his own net after just 13 seconds. Bayern went on to win 3-2 that day – this time, FCA manage to make it count.
