Baum: “We made one mistake too many”

First Team 09.12.2018, 01:03
FC Augsburg fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat in Leverkusen on Saturday. FCA have now suffered four consecutive defeats. After the match, a disappointed Manuel Baum said “we believe the ball went out of play shortly before the goal. This is especially disappointing.” Here is the post match reaction. Philipp Max: “We once again tried to play nasty football to disrupt our opponents. We partly achieved this as we made life difficult for Leverkusen. However, the final result means a narrow defeat for us. The result is what it is. We have experienced similar difficult situations in the past in Augsburg. We will emerge from this together as a team.” Daniel Baier: “In the first half, we were not able to counter to the best of our ability. After falling behind, we played better going forwards and managed to create a few chances. You have to give the team and fans credit for this. We gave everything we had. It is incredible to experience the support from the fans after the match. Equally, we will also taste success again in the near future.” Andreas Luthe: “We delivered a very standard performance away from home today. We are a team who can cause problems against any side. We showed this today but unfortunately require too many chances to score goals. We were also punished for our mistakes. However, we are team with a lot of character. We will continue to work hard and find that winning feeling again.” Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “Above all, Leverkusen have a lot of quality in attack. However, we defended well in the first half. It was disappointing to fall behind to Leverkusen’s first clear chance of the second half. We had three or four really good chances at the end of the match. We were also unlucky when Ji’s shot crashed against the bar. We travel home empty handed and we know, as a team, that we have to keep fighting.” Manuel Baum: “We wanted to play in a more compact style defensively but encountered problems. Our counter attacking play wasn’t as strong either. The match was developing into a stalemate before we fell behind. We believe the ball went out of play shortly before the goal. This is especially disappointing. As a result, we lost a bit of composure. Today’s defeat is especially annoying because we made one mistake too many and were punished.” Leverkusen head coach Heiko Herrlich: “We knew we would have to play patiently against Augsburg. We created a few good chances against a team that defended well. We took the lead in the 75th minute and it was a completely different match after we scored. Augsburg tried everything they could to score. We were worried in the closing stages but held on for the victory.”
