No points in Schalke

First Team 12.03.2017, 10:20
FC Augsburg will leave Schalke with no points on matchday 24 after they lost 3-0 to the Royal Blues. Guido Burgstaller netted a brace, while Daniel Caligiuri got the third for the hosts. Paul Verhaegh was back captaining FCA after suffering some back problems and Moritz Leitner was given his debut in an Augsburg shirt. Halil Altintop and Jonathan Schmid also returned to the starting XI after missing the match against Leipzig the week before. It was also a reunion with former FCA manager Markus Weinzierl, whilst Philipp Max and Halil Altintop also made returns to their previous club. Schalke got off to a lightning start. A Johannes Geis corner was deflected off Konstantinos Stafylidis and fell straight to the feet of Guido Burgstaller at the far post. He made no mistake and tapped in to give Schalke the lead. The Royal Blues continued to dominate the opening stages of the match as the Fuggerstädter were limited to the occasional counterattack. Schalke's dominance began to diminish but the away team could not take advantage as the home side instead extended their lead. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting powered his way into the FCA box and had the vision to find Burgstaller again, who slotted home to make it 2-0. However Benedikt Höwedes brought down Raul Bobadilla in the area just moments later in what was the Paraguayan's 100th Bundesliga appearance for Augsburg. The referee pointed to the spot but Fährmann guessed right and saved Paul Verhaegh's penalty. Augsburg were then made to pay as Sead Kolasinac burst down the left-hand side after FCA lost the ball going forward and crossed it to the far post, where Daniel Caligiuri was on hand to finish. Yet Manuel Baum's men refused to give up. Stafylidis hit a fine free-kick five minutes before the break and beat the Schalke wall but Fährmann leapt to tip the ball over and make a fantastic save. Another major disappointment for FCA was the substitution of Bobadilla after the forward was forced off due to injury. Dong-Won Ji came on to replace him. The hosts went into the dressing room at the break with a commanding 3-0 lead. FCA started the second half much better. Substitute Georg Teigl tried his luck early on after a nice assist from Ji but Fährmann comfortably saved the Austrian's effort. The Fuggerstädter had to take more risks given the scoreline but failed to create any real clear-cut chances. Instead, Choupo-Moting nearly made it four in the 64th minute but his curling effort flashed just over the bar. Max Meyer had a go from long range but he could not beat a solid Marwin Hitz. The Royal Blues continued to create chances as Benedikt Höwedes charged down the field with five minutes to go, while Jewhen Konopljanka also should have scored in the 89th minute after being found free in the FCA box. It finished 3-0 at the Veltins Arena and Augsburg will have to make the trip home empty-handed.
