From Nuremberg to Augsburg

First Team 03.09.2026, 18:00

On deadline day, FC Augsburg added a versatile forward to their ranks in the form of one Arijon Ibrahimović. The Germany U21 international not only boasts a first-class footballing education, but has already gained valuable experience in the Bundesliga, Italian football and the Champions League. Here’s a closer look at the new signing.

Ibrahimović began his youth career with Greuther Fürth and 1. FC Nürnberg before moving to the FC Bayern München academy. There, the young Nuremberg native received the finishing touches to his development and established himself as one of the most exciting attacking players of his age group. Since making his Germany U16 debut, Ibrahimović has represented every Germany youth national team and has made 30 appearances for his country in that time, scoring 12 goals along the way. The 20-year-old is currently part of the Germany U21 squad and most recently featured in the European Championship qualifiers against Malta and Greece.

A Bundesliga debut at FC Bayern

Ibrahimović made his professional debut for FC Bayern München on 11th February 2023, coming on in their Bundesliga match against VfL Bochum. On 10th December 2024, he also made his first Champions League appearance, featuring against Shakhtar Donetsk. It was a particularly memorable evening for the German-Kosovan forward, as, just a few hours later, shortly after midnight, he was presented with a cake to mark his 19th birthday.

The attacking player gained further valuable experience during loan spells with Frosinone Calcio, where he made 18 appearances, and Lazio, where he featured twice. His real breakthrough in senior football finally came last season at 1. FC Heidenheim. Ibrahimović quickly established himself there, making 34 competitive appearances for FCH across all competitions, scoring twice and providing five assists.

A Versatile option with plenty of room to develop

Ibrahimović is comfortable operating in several positions in the forward department. Whether on the left wing, in an attacking midfield role or out on the right, the 20-year-old is capable of showcasing his quality in a number of different positions. His technical ability, athleticism and vision are among his key strengths. He’s also a force to be reckoned with in one-on-one situations, and is able to either create chances in the final third or finish off moves himself.

FCA sporting director Benni Weber also highlighted these qualities while emphasising the new signing’s potential for further development. Ibrahimović arrives in Augsburg on a season-long loan deal with an option-to-buy clause included. “His physicality and his undeniable determination are a particularly good fit for FCA and the way we want to play football here. At the same time, we believe there is still plenty of potential for him to develop further.”
