Weinzierl: “Rewarded for our efforts”

Reaction to Wednesday’s draw with Leipzig

First Team 15.12.2021, 23:30

FC Augsburg managed to come away with a point from their meeting with Rasenballsport Leipzig, courtesy of a late equaliser. “We showed too much respect in the first half. We were much more courageous after the break,” was head coach Markus Weinzierl’s analysis. We have gathered all the post-match reaction.

Reece Oxford: “We didn’t get a foothold in the game in the first half, although Leipzig made it very difficult for us. Fortunately, we were only 1-0 down at the break, where we talked about showing more fight in the second half. We were a lot better after the restart and managed to grab a deserved equaliser.”

Daniel Caligiuri: “I think we can be happy with the point given how the game played out. We showed more presence in the second half, were more aggressive in the challenges and took more risks. We were determined to get the equaliser, we threw everything at it and, in the end, we got our reward. We knew that we always have to show the right mental strength and go into every game with the right amount of commitment, just like we did a few weeks ago against Bayern. We now want to end this busy run with three points in Fürth on the weekend, although we certainly cannot afford to underestimate them.”

Niklas Dorsch: “When you look at the second half, it’s a deserved point. We can consider ourselves lucky that it was only 1-0 at half time. We didn’t get stuck in at all and didn’t defend well. The gaffer found the right words at half time and we showed the right reaction. Now we need to keep going and keep picking up points, next in Fürth and then after the winter break.”

Markus Weinzierl: “It’s an important point. We weren’t all that good in the first half; we had too much respect for the quality of our opposition and didn’t get our teeth into the game. We were more courageous after the break and got our equaliser shortly before the end from the penalty. I’m delighted that we were rewarded for our efforts in the second half. We’re happy with the point and now we want to take that momentum to Fürth and follow it up.”

Domenico Tedesco: “We had a really good first half; we had a good structure and created numerous chances. We needed to make more of it though. If we had been 2-0 up at the break, the second half would have been a lot calmer. Instead, we’re left disappointed at having conceded a late goal and only taking a point back home.”
