Tietz: “In the end, scoring goals is all that counts”

Post-match reaction to 3-1 defeat against Kiel

FC Augsburg suffered a 3-1 loss at home against Holstein Kiel on Sunday afternoon. Read on for all the post-match reaction from the players and the coaches.

Phillip Tietz: “The game was a tough one, but a 3-1 defeat says a lot. We were the better side for 20 minutes and could have taken the lead, but then came the penalty. We had some good moments after that as well, but in the end, scoring goals is all that counts and not shots or possession.”

Finn Dahmen: “We started well and should have taken the lead early on. The decision to award them a penalty was the wrong one, in my opinion and changed the game a bit. At the same time we still had enough chances that we didn’t manage to take and we were a bit unlucky too. We now need to shake off this setback and try to take six points from our remaining games.”

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We started well and should have made it 1-0. Kiel then took the lead following a questionable penalty decision. In my opinion, Chrislain clearly got the ball – this is something that we’ve been dealing with all season. There’s a lot at stake still at the end of the season, both for Kiel and for us. With that in mind, the referees should at least be going over to the monitor to check it. Kiel were able to sit back and wait after going 1-0 up, which obviously played right into their hands. We were being stretched more which obviously meant that there was more room on the pitch. Kiel were able to wait to exploit our mistakes, which is exactly what they then did.”

Alexis Claude-Maurice: “We conceded but didn’t manage to score ourselves, despite having several chances to do so. It’s been a while since we last let in three goals and we weren’t clinical enough at the other end. What was remarkable was the support from our fans, even when we were 3-0 down. We now want to win our final two games for them.”

Chrislain Matsima: “Today’s a tough day because it was a difficult game. We gave away three points despite having full control of the game. The penalty definitely changed the game, but I think I definitely got to the ball first and the referee could have at least taken the time to review it. We also should have taken our chances; Kiel were far more clinical today. We now need to analyse this game and focus on our remaining two matches, which we obviously want to win. The season isn’t over yet!”

Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg head coach): “We must be Kiel’s favourite opponents. The statistics will tell you that we played well, but that doesn’t matter when you end up losing 3-1. We started well and put our opponents under pressure. Samuel had two good chances and Mert also had two big chances. Kiel’s goalkeeper was the man of the match today after making five or six great saves. I’m not placing the blame on my team, as they worked hard today – we managed 35 crosses, 26 shots and 12 corners taken and none conceded. That’s why we’re disappointed and can’t call it a good performance, because it’s goals that count in the end.”

Marcel Rapp (Holstein Kiel head coach): “We struggled to find our way into the game at the start. Augsburg were pressing us high and not giving us much space. Both teams managed to create chances for themselves and then we made it 1-0. We were extremely clinical in the first half – it felt like every shot we took ended up in the back of the net. The second half also got off to a perfect start for us as we made it 3-0. Augsburg were definitely dictating the pace of the game and also had several chances, including a couple of clear-cut ones. We’re heading home feeling good, but also knowing that our job isn't done yet.”
