FCA beaten 5-2 by Bournemouth in eventful friendly

FC Augsburg faced Premier League side AFC Bournemouth in a highly competitive friendly. FCA were beaten 5-2 after four 30-minute periods in sweltering heat at the Saalfelden Arena in Austria, where the Fuggerstädter stopped off en route to their training camp.
Bournemouth, who finished sixth in the Premier League last season and are now managed by Marco Rose, shaded the opening 30 minutes, although FCA competed well. Evanilson opened the scoring in the 12th minute after Finn Dahmen lost possession. Anton Kade had Augsburg’s best opportunity of the first 30, but Đorđe Petrović produced a fine save to keep out his powerful effort.
FCA improved markedly in the second period and enjoyed their best spell of the game. Rodrigo Ribeiro was denied by Will Dennis in the 44th minute, before Kade and Marius Wolf also had chances. Augsburg then unsuccessfully appealed for a penalty following a 57th-minute challenge on Kade. FCA trailed 1-0 after 60 minutes.
Wholesale changes for the final hour
Baum sent out an almost entirely different side for the final 60 minutes. Only Alexis Claude-Maurice, who had already come on as a substitute, Keven Schlotterbeck and Noahkai Banks remained on the pitch. Bournemouth struck twice in quick succession. Alex Tóth made it 2-0 after an Augsburg error at the back (64’), before Ben Gannon-Doak added a third four minutes later (68’). FCA responded immediately, however, with Claude-Maurice calmly converting a spot kick to make it 3-1 (72’).
The contest continued at a relentless pace. 18-year-old academy player Tim Schnitzer made it 3-2 following a corner (84’) to give FCA renewed hope. Bournemouth quickly restored their two-goal advantage, though, as Marcus Tavernier struck after Nediljko Labrović had made a fine save (87’). Enes Ünal completed the scoring in the 110th minute, turning in Tavernier’s pullback to make it 5-2. By that stage, further changes had seen several academy players enter the fray for Augsburg.
FCA will spend a week at their training camp near Achensee from Friday. They will then return to Augsburg for Family Day at the WWK ARENA, which will include a friendly against Sassuolo. Kick-off is at 15:30 CEST on Saturday, 8th August.
