Day 3: New signing joins the action

Engels: “I want to take my chance”

First Team 06.01.2023, 18:26

Training, training, training: FC Augsburg’s third day in Algorfa was dominated by the football. Split into two groups, the FCA first team had training sessions in both the morning and afternoon. Among the group for the first time was new signing Arne Engels.

In his first interview with FCA TV, the 19-year-old Belgian spoke about his first impressions of the club and the reasons he chose to become a Fuggerstädter: “The Bundesliga fits my style of play well,” said Engels, an academy graduate from Club Brugge who feels best on the right flank and in the centre of midfield. The Belgian has represented his country at U19 level nine times so far.

The start of 2023 means a big change for Engels, who is moving away from home for the first time, hundreds of kilometres from his family and girlfriend. As the signing was announced the day before the squad made the journey to the camp in Spain, Engels has had a slightly different introduction to life as an FCA player. “All the guys have been really nice and supported me a lot,” Engels commented. The 19-year-old has spent a lot of time with his roommate Josué Mbila, as well as the Scandinavian contingent of FCA first-teamers.

Engels will make his first appearance for the club in Saturday’s double friendly against 1. FC Union Berlin. “I want to show myself and take my chance,” said the midfielder. Both matches will take place on the pitches used for training by the Berlin club, in Campoamor, and will be broadcast live on FCA TV. Kickoff for game one is 13:00 CET.
