Uduokhai and Richter at the Olympics

Germany will face Brazil, Saudi Arabia and Ivory Coast in Group D

Germany’s Olympic Games team, including FCA players Felix Uduokhai and Marco Richter, will play their first group game on Thursday (13:30 CEST) against Brazil. Coach Stefan Kuntz is only going to the tournament with an 18-man squad.

Due to several players pulling out late, Stefan Kuntz has only got a squad of 18 players (15 outfielders) for the Olympics in Tokyo, despite 22 being permitted. Originally, Niklas Dorsch was included in the squad, however FCA’s new signing opted to concentrate on settling in at his new club instead.

Nonetheless, two FCA players – Felix Uduokhai and Marco Richter – are still going to the Olympics. No other club has more players in the Germany squad – Hertha BSC (Jordan Torunarigha and Arne Maier) and 1. FC Union Berlin (Max Kruse and Cedric Teuchert) are also sending two players to Tokyo.

Uduokhai and Richter may miss the start of the season

As well as Brazil, Germany will take on Saudi Arabia (Sunday, 25th July at 13:30 CEST) and Ivory Coast (Wednesday, 28th July at 10:00 CEST). The winners of the four groups will make the quarterfinals, with the final taking place on Sunday, 7th August (13:30 CEST) in Tokyo. If Germany were to reach the final, Uduokhai and Richter would be missing for FCA’s first-round DFB-Pokal tie at Greifswalder FC, which is on the same day.

Germany’s friendly before the tournament was sadly overshadowed by racial abuse. After defender Torunarigha was racially abused, the Germany side left the field of play. “When one of our players is racially abused, playing on is not an option,” explained coach Kuntz. Uduokhai had made it 1-1 just before the incident.
