Schmidt: “We owe the fans a good performance”

First Team 22.08.2019, 22:56
The new season has finally begun and FC Augsburg’s first game back at the WWK ARENA is fast approaching. After a 5-1 defeat away to Borussia Dortmund, head coach Martin Schmidt and his team want to show the fans a different side to themselves and secure their first three points at home against 1.FC Union Berlin. “We have thoroughly analysed the Dortmund game and have learnt a lot from the defeat. But that is in the past now and the team is motivated for our first home game. The positivity in training and the excitement for Saturday is palpable,” says head coach Martin Schmidt, summarising the last few days. FCA face newly-promoted 1.FC Union Berlin in the first home game of the season on Saturday, 24th August (15:30 CEST). Union also endured a tough start to their season as they lost 4-0 to RB Leipzig. Nevertheless, Schmidt is fully aware of the quality that Union possess: “We’re facing a promoted side who have come to the Bundesliga to stay. Union had the best defence in the second tier and are extremely dangerous from set pieces. They know what they are capable of and will be hoping to show a different side to their game than they showed against Leipzig.” More fresh faces in the FCA squad Augsburg have received more than one boost in the last few days. Two new defenders are set to make their debuts against Union with Tin Jedvaj and Stephan Lichtsteiner joining Augsburg to provide reinforcement at the back. Schmidt is delighted with his new signings: “Tin will be a great help for us – he already knows the Bundesliga and is in peak physical condition. Stephan is also an unbelievable asset to have. He fits into the team brilliantly and, above all, he can use his experience to help the younger players.” As well as the new signings, we have two key players returning from injury. Alfred Finnbogason and Philipp Max are back training with the team and are available for the match against Union. Schmidt is especially pleased to see Finnbogason return after his long term absence: “I am extremely happy that Alfred is an option for us again. With him and Florian Niederlechner we have two high quality strikers in front of goal.” Spurned on towards victory with home support “Our fans always give us loyal support and we owe them a victory at home,” emphasises the Swiss coach. “Our relationship with them is always positive, even after a defeat – now we want to celebrate with them.”
