Schmidt: "A fire has been lit"

Saturday’s 2-1 victory against Eintracht Frankfurt saw FC Augsburg get their first win of the season. Both FCA head coach Martin Schmidt and his opposite number Adi Hütter saw the two halves of the game differently. Here’s the full full match reaction.   Florian Niederlechner: “Frankfurt have a lot of quality, but we had a really good first half. After the break, we held on and managed to pull off a win. That was a really important mental victory and it gives us confidence for the challenges ahead.” Alfred Finnbogason: "Getting the win is a great relief. We played some really good football in the first half but the second half was a tussle. When you consider that this is the first game Raphael Framberger and I have started in months, we’re delighted to have managed to play the full 90 minutes and cap that performance off with a win.” Marco Richter: “Of course, I’m happy about the result. It is strange that I managed to score again against Frankfurt. The goals we got before half-time were very important because Frankfurt started to pile the pressure on after the break. But over both halves I believe we deserved the victory. It was a step forward, but we’re not quite there yet.” Martin Schmidt: “It was a game of two halves. We wanted to win the ball and then counter quickly. We did a lot of work on this over the week and it showed in the first half. We struggled after the break. But we held firm and defended the flanks courageously and diligently. Getting the victory is nice but we can’t rest on our laurels because we still have a lot to do. You can see that a fire has been lit and the confidence will come soon. Our goal now has to be to keep a clean sheet in our next game.” Adi Hütter: “It’s easy for me to sum up the game. Augsburg had a great tactical setup and we were deservedly 2-0 down by half-time. We were a little naive and played too far up the pitch. After the break, it was a completely different scenario and we had countless chances. It’s a shame that we weren’t alert enough in the first half and didn’t do enough with the possession we had in the second.”
