Rieder: “For us, that feels like two points dropped”
Match reaction following the draw against Union Berlin
Despite enjoying a lengthy spell with a numerical advantage and taking the lead, FC Augsburg were unable to do more than draw with 1. FC Union Berlin and were left frustrated at missing the opportunity to claim all three points. Here is the post-match reaction in full.
Fabian Rieder: “For us, that feels like two points dropped today. We need to make better use of our numerical advantage and do more to protect our lead. Naturally, going five games without a win is frustrating. These spells are part of football, but we want to get through this together. I’m absolutely convinced that we have the quality to do so.”
Anton Kade: “The opposition defended really compactly. It’s difficult to break through in that situation, but we have to come up with the answers. There were some good moves as well, so we shouldn’t look at everything negatively. We’re straight back in action during this busy week, and the cup tie will be similarly difficult. We’ll need to be ready for plenty of individual battles.”
Han-Noah Massengo: “I can barely remember my goal now – I just got my head to the ball. It was a crazy game. We had more than enough time to take control, but at one point we lost our focus a little. We need to do better in that respect.”
Finn Dahmen: “We started the game well, then the red card changed things. We had plenty of shots, but we weren’t dangerous enough and didn’t create any clear-cut chances. We struggled against Union’s compact defence and switched off once, which cost us. Even so, we were the better team over the 90 minutes. That’s why it’s frustrating that we didn’t take all three points.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “After the red card, we were too impatient. We need to make better use of our numerical advantage and come up with better ideas against such a compact opponent. My record is still something special and was a major personal goal of mine. Not many players manage to stay at one club for so long these days. Augsburg is my home. I’ll never forget this day with my family and friends. Of course, winning would have made it even better. We can be disappointed for a little while, but from tomorrow our focus switches to Tuesday’s cup tie.”
Manuel Baum: “We started well in the opening minutes before the red card, and the game was going exactly as we’d expected. The sending-off changed the whole match. We then saw Union’s DNA, as they defended with everything they had. We failed to take advantage of that, despite having plenty of shots on goal. We simply didn’t make use of the extra man properly. The second red card opened the game up again, and we were determined to win it. But with a numerical advantage, we really should have come away with the victory.”
Mauro Lustrinelli: “I want to focus on the positives: we spent a long time with ten men and showed great character. It wasn’t easy against FCA, who have already put in some very good performances at home this season. I was also very pleased with our response after conceding. Augsburg could have won it towards the end, but so could we. Taking the game as a whole, I have to be satisfied with a point.
