Rieder: "It just wasn't our day"

Match reaction to the 4-0 defeat in Berlin

First Team 16.05.2026, 18:33

FC Augsburg were left empty-handed after a 4-0 defeat at 1. FC Union Berlin on the final matchday of the season. Read on for all the post-match reaction.

Fabian Rieder: "I can't really explain it. We've played well over the past weeks and worked hard to improve, which is why we'd obviously hoped for more today. It just wasn't our day. It has to be said, that Union were the better side. Nevertheless, I'm extremely proud of our team – we've got a great squad with a lot of potential."

Michael Gregoritsch: "It's obviously a painful defeat for us. At times, we were missing options that would have helped us find our way out of some tight spots, but we still never gave up. If you consider where we were in the winter, then we can give ourselves a pat on the shoulder for the fact that we even still had a chance of qualifying for Europe on the final matchday. Although it's not the way we'd hoped to end the season, we still put in several strong performances in the second half of the season, which won't be erased by today's game."

Manuel Baum (FC Augsburg head coach): "Congratulations to Union on a deserved victory. Today's game has to be viewed separately, because we didn't manage to perform the way that we have done often enough this season. As a result, we're obviously disappointed with our performance today. However, if we consider the season as a whole, we can view it through a positive lens overall."

Marie-Louise Eta (1. FC Union Berlin head coach): "We're very pleased today, not only with the result but also with the way in which we played. We'd set out to achieve a lot today and wanted to celebrate a win, together with our fans. The lads did a lot of things well today and got their reward in the end."
