Uduokhai heads home the winner for Germany’s Olympics team

Germany defeat Saudi Arabia 3-2

Germany’s team for the Olympic Games won their second group game against Saudi Arabia 3-2, despite going down to ten men again. FCA defender Felix Uduokhai scored the winning goal.

Unlike in the opening group game against Brazil (4-2 defeat), Germany started well on this occasion. Nadiem Amiri put them ahead after just 11 minutes after a nice move. However, Sami Khalil Al-Najei equalised for Saudi Arabia with 30 minutes played. Stefan Kuntz’s team found another goal before the break through Ragnar Ache (43’) to ensure they had a 2-1 lead at half time.

Al-Najei then levelled for a second time (50’), and then Germany saw their second red card of the tournament already, with Amos Pieper getting sent off for a professional foul after 67 minutes. Despite this, Germany showed their character and took the lead for the third time on the night. Max Kruse’s corner was headed home by FCA’s Felix Uduokhai with 15 minutes to play. Marco Richter came off the bench in the dying stages to help see the narrow lead home.

Germany now have their fate in their own hands regarding qualification for the quarterfinals. They need to beat Ivory Coast in their final group game on Wednesday, 28th July (10:00 CEST) to guarantee a place in the knockouts.
