The year 2019 is coming to an end – a good time to take a look at twelve exciting and emotional months full of ups and downs. March brought us two memorable games, with a win against the league leaders Dortmund and a nail-biting comeback against close rivals Hannover in the table.
There are definitely easier tasks for a team that has lost three games in a row than to face the league leaders, but perhaps the arrival of Borussia Dortmund at the WWK-ARENA was a blessing in disguise. Everyone expected the home side to lose, but Augsburg pulled off a shock result and beat BVB 2-1 thanks to two goals from Dong-Won Ji. After Dortmund had reduced the gap to 2-1, the closing stages were especially tense for the home fans, but a second Dortmund goal failed to materialize.
“We let the fans down last time, so this is an important win,” said team captain Daniel Baier after the match. The win against Dortmund gave Augsburg more confidence, and thanks to a concentrated defensive performance in their next away game against RB Leipzig, they came away with a respectable 0-0 draw.
In the next week FCA welcomed close rivals in the league Hannover 96 to the WWK ARENA. The visitors took the lead, but in the last half-hour goals from Sergio Cordova, Jonathan Schmid and Andre Hahn secured a 3-1 home win for FCA. Head coach Manuel Baum spoke of his “great relief,” after the game. Confident once again after the victory, FCA went into the international break with a five-point cushion between them and the relegation zone.
FCA went on to play another one of their close rivals in the league, FC Nürnberg, next, but they unfortunately came away from that match empty-handed. Nürnberg inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Augsburg, who were unable to get anything from the game due to a strong second-half performance from their hosts. As a result, it looked set to be a relegation battle until the very end for FCA.
