Maaßen: “Finally a victory”

Reaction to the 1-0 win over Gladbach

First Team 25.01.2023, 23:56

FC Augsburg recorded their first home win since beating FC Bayern back in September. The joy was clear to see after the final whistle against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Here is the post-match reaction.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “The first half was even, but we were by far the better team after the break. We finally got what we deserved. This win is really important as it will give us more belief and confidence. The new signings have brought in some fresh energy and impetus, and that’s really helping us.”

Mergim Berisha: “That was a really, really good performance by us. We defended well as a team and created a number of chances. I’m happy I could help the team with a goal, but the fact we won is the most important thing.”

Ermedin Demirović: “Today’s win was fully deserved, we could’ve gone ahead earlier on and won by a greater margin too. We had loads of chances and kept things really tight at the back. The defeat against Dortmund hurt us, but today everyone could see motivated we were for the game. We now want to get revenge against Freiburg after losing against them earlier in the season, and we will travel to play my former club full of confidence.”

Niklas Dorsch: “Celebrating my comeback with a great win at home feels fantastic. I had only been on the pitch for a minute when we scored, and I knew that we would have to give our all in the final few minutes to hold on. We were dominant, had lots of chances and deservedly got the win. We now need to build on this in Freiburg.”

Enrico Maaßen: “I’m really proud of my team. We wanted to finally win again after losing in Dortmund and we’ve done just that. We’ve played really well over the last few games and tonight was just about winning, which we deservedly did. We had a pass completion rate of over 80%, which is great for us, and had 14 shots in total – these are things we worked on during the winter break. We tried almost a bit too hard in the second half, but kept our structure and then had two or three big chances, and took one of them. We’re really happy to have beaten a good team like Gladbach.”

Daniel Farke: “We’re obviously disappointed. It was a game of two halves here today. It’s always tough to play in Augsburg. We did really well in the first half, we barely let them have a chance and pressed them well. The second half wasn’t at the same level, which is partly down to losing Christoph Kramer to injury. We weren’t as solid and our structure with the ball wasn’t as good. That meant we couldn’t challenge our opponents and we weren’t focused enough at the back for their goal. That goal then made the difference."
