Herrlich: “The team reacted well”

Post-match reaction to the draw against Freiburg

First Team 28.11.2020, 18:45

FC Augsburg maintained their unbeaten run at home to Freiburg in the Bundesliga, with a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon. “We’ve had better games, but it wasn’t all bad,” head coach Heiko Herrlich said about the game. We’ve rounded up all the post-match reaction.

Florian Niederlechner: “If you look at the game as a neutral, then both sides deserved a point. Freiburg were a bit lucky to score, and so were we, as it came from a deflection. Both teams worked well out of possession, pressured hard and disrupted the flow of play. It felt like a typical 0-0 game to me, except for the fact that it ended 1-1.”

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We struggled to find our way into the game, because Freiburg were playing a high press. We should have defended better on the opener, but despite going behind we managed to fight back once again. The equaliser gave us another boost. We have to be happy with the point.”

Ruben Vargas: “I was actually aiming for the far post with my shot, but then it took a deflection and went in at the near post, which was fine by me. Overall, it’s a deserved draw, despite us not giving up after scoring the equaliser and showing that we really wanted to turn the game around.”

Heiko Herrlich: “It was a tough game today. Both teams didn’t allow each other much. We had the bulk of possession, but often made the wrong decisions. This changed a bit in the second half. We defended poorly on their goal, since we as had more men back than they did. That was a gift for Freiburg. But, the team reacted well, fought back and wanted to turn the game around. We’ve definitely had better games, but it wasn’t all bad. Sometimes, in the end you just have to take a point, which was definitely deserved today.”

Christian Streich: “It was a good team performance today. We looked motivated and confident, which allowed us to cause Augsburg some problems. After we scored, Augsburg looked stronger and were able to find the better solutions. However, we didn’t allow them much, up until we conceded. We cannot remain hung up on this game for too long. We’re happy with our performance, but not with the result.”
