Gregoritsch scores for Austria – Koubek called up

Eventful weekend of EURO 2020 action

First Team 14.06.2021, 10:50

It was an eventful weekend of EURO 2020 action and not just from an Augsburg perspective. The football, however, was overshadowed by Denmark’s Christian Eriksen who collapsed on the pitch. Thankfully, he is now recovering in hospital.

Ruben Vargas’s Switzerland got their campaign underway on Saturday afternoon, drawing 1-1 with Wales. Gladbach’s Breel Embolo had given them the lead at the start of the second half, but Kieffer Moore scored after 74 minutes to ensure the points were shared. FCA’s Vargas didn’t come off the bench in Baku.

Fredrik Jensen also didn’t feature for Finland against Denmark. That game, however, was overshadowed by an incident involving Dane Christian Eriksen. The 29-year-old collapsed on the pitch just before half time. After brilliant work done by his teammates and the medical staff in Copenhagen, he was stabilised and taken to hospital, where he is still recovering. The game resumed after a two-hour break and Finland won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Joel Pohjanpalo (60’). Ex-FCA man

Pierre-Emile Højbjerg missed the chance to equalise from the spot 15 minutes later.
Austria recorded their first ever win at a European Championship, beating North Macedonia 3-1. Stefan Lainer (18’) gave them the lead in Bucharest, before Goran Pandev levelled proceedings (28’). FCA’s Michael Gregoritsch, who came off the bench in the 58th minute, then converted from a cross to make it 2-1 (78’). Marco Arnautovic then sealed the win with a late third.

Koubek called up – Córdova loses at Copa América

A fourth FC Augsburg player will now be at EURO 2020. Tomáš Koubek has been called up for Czech Republic’s squad to replace the injured Jiri Pavlenka. They will face Scotland in Glasgow on Monday at 15:00 CEST.

The Copa América also kicked off this weekend in South America. Sergio Córdova, who spent last season on loan at Arminia Bielefeld, came on in the 77th minute for Venezuela in their 3-0 defeat to Brazil. Their goals were scored by Marquinhos (23’), Neymar (64’) and Gabriel Barbosa (89’).
