Gouweleeuw: “We put in a mature performance”

Reaction to Sunday’s cup win

FC Augsburg passed their first test of the season, advancing to the second round of the DFB-Pokal with a 2-0 victory away to Hallescher FC. We gathered the reaction from both camps after the game.

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We knew it wouldn’t be an easy task. Even when it was still 0-0 at half time, we stayed calm. We put in a mature performance and decided the game with two goals in the second half, then saw it out professionally.”

Marius Wolf: “Halle didn’t make it easy for us. We should have made more of our chances, especially in the first half. In the end though, we were the better side over the 90 minutes, scored twice and fully deserved the win.”

Keven Schlotterbeck: “We’re really pleased with the win, which we fought hard for as a team. Of course, I was happy to be in the starting XI today, but it’s still early in the season. The coach decides before each game what the best line-up is. I just want to make the most of my opportunities.

Sandro Wagner: “We came up against the kind of tough opponent we expected. Hallescher FC were well structured and gave us a real challenge today. It was great to play here – you could already feel on the way to the stadium that this was a proper occasion. At times the ground was a real cauldron and the atmosphere was fantastic for our team. We started well and could have gone ahead within seconds, then had another good chance shortly after. We knew we had to be alert when they transitioned, and at times our structure wasn’t quite right. But in the end, the win was deserved, and we’re very pleased to have started the season with a victory.”

Robert Schröder (Hallescher FC head coach): “We found it very difficult at the start and Augsburg could have taken the lead early. But we managed to shake that off and created some good chances ourselves. With a bit more composure or luck, we might have gone in front. In the second half, the one thing that mustn’t happen did happen. Even so, the team never gave up and gave everything. We can be proud of that, and it’s something we need to build on.”
