FCA U15s kick off international tournament with a draw

0-0 against Real Salt Lake

Youth 19.08.2022, 19:11

FC Augsburg drew 0-0 with Real Salt Lake on Friday evening in the opening game of the international U15 tournament. The game marked the start of the youth competition, celebrating the opening of the Paul Renz Academy at the weekend – following on from the tournaments our former academy head Paul Renz would organise at the club on a yearly basis on Pentecost weekend.

After heavy rain in Augsburg for most of the day, the game kicked off at short notice on the artificial pitch at the Paul Renz Academy. The weather conditions – as it only drizzled at the beginning of the game – did no damage to the teams’ performance.  Over two 17 minute halves the sides were evenly matched, with the visitors from Salt Lake City controlling the first half. In the second period, Felix Neumeyer’s side assumed charge of proceedings, and Mateo Mrden had the best chance of the match when he headed the ball just wide, meaning the game finished in a goalless draw.

Ten teams from nine nations compete

The tournament resumed on Saturday morning. Ten teams from nine nations make up two groups, and proceedings will start with the match between Silkeborg IF and Dinamo Zagreb. The first teams to play their games, the Luxembourg national team and Shakhtar Donetsk, were watching the action unfold on Friday.

The first youth competition organized by Renz took place in 1953. With the motto “The youth build bridges to the world,” the Pentecost tournaments became a yearly highlight.
