Lower Saxony Cup winners
FC Augsburg’s first-round DFB-Pokal opponents will be MTV Eintracht Celle, who won the Lower Saxony Cup on Saturday evening.
MTV Eintracht Celle overcame fellow Oberliga side MTV Gifhorn 3-2 in the final of the cup. Celle took the lead after just 4 minutes but were pegged back seven minutes before half time. Gifhorn then took the lead in the 58th minute, but Felix Kruger turned the game around. The first of his two goals came in the 72nd minute to level the scores, before he put his side ahead eleven minutes later. Celle held on for the win to reach the DFB-Pokal for the first time in the history of the club.
“Of course we are the favourites against Celle,” said FCA head coach Heiko Herrlich. “However, despite the differences in quality, there are always surprises in the DFB-Pokal. Therefore it is important that we go into the game in the right mindset. Last season we were knocked out early, this year we want to go as far as possible.”
The first round of the Pokal will take placed between the 11th and 14th of September. Specific dates and times for each tie have not yet been announced.
