FC Augsburg suffered a 3-1 defeat at home against Holstein Kiel on Bundesliga matchday 32. Despite starting strongly, the hosts conceded twice in the opening half, with Steve Mounié’s consolation goal coming too late.
Head coach Jess Thorup made one change to his starting line up following last weekend’s 2-0 defeat in Leverkusen. Mert Kömür came into the side in place of Elvis Rexhbecaj. Arne Maier was also able to return to the squad after serving his red-card suspension.
FCA’s last meeting with Kiel ended in a 5-1 defeat at the end of last year, with Thorup’s side seeking to take points off their opponents this time around. Their first chance came in the sixth minute, as Kömür’s corner flew across the face of goal. Samuel Essende only narrowly missed meeting it, while Lasse Rosenboom’s rebound went wide of the post.
Controversial penalty awarded for Kiel
Kiel then went close through Shuto Machino in the 18th minute. Shortly after, it was Kömür’s turn to test Kiel goalkeeper Thomas Dähne. The shot-stopper was then once again able to deny the FCA midfielder in the 22nd minute. The hosts were then dealt a significant setback after referee Harm Osmers pointed to the spot following a slide tackle from Chrislain Matsima. The defender clearly got the ball, but the VAR did not intervene to overturn the referee’s original decision. Machino then stepped up to slot home the opening goal from the penalty spot (24’).
The Storks managed to double their lead just before the break. Steven Skrzybski played a ball through to Alexander Bernhardsson, with Cédric Zesiger able to block his initial attempt. The forward was then able to net the rebound past FCA goalkeeper Finn Dahmen (40’). Just minutes later, Zesiger had a chance to get one back for the hosts but Dähne was once again able to make the save.
Mounié beats Dähne late on
The second half continued on in much of the same manner as the first, with Kiel clinical in front of goal and FCA too susceptible at the back. The Storks were then able to net a third in the 51st minute, as Skrzybski helped set up Bernhardsson for his second goal of the afternoon. The hosts sought to recover from this latest setback, as Alexis Claude-Maurice hit the post with an attempt from 20 metres out.
Armin Gigovic forced Dahmen into making a save in the 66th minute, before Mounié (67’) and Phillip Tietz (70’) both narrowly missed the goal in quick succession. Mounié was able to put another header on target in the 74th minute, but Dähne was once again able to parry it. It took until the 90th minute for FCA to find a way past the keeper, with Mounié netting a late consolation goal. Despite taking a total of 26 shots, the hosts were unable to find the back of the net more than once against the Storks.
Next weekend, FC Augsburg will be away at VfB Stuttgart on the penultimate matchday of the season (Sunday, 11th May, 19:30 CEST).
