During this October international break, FC Augsburg took on SSV Ulm 1846 at the TSV-Sportzentrum in Burgau. The sides faced off in front of a crowd of 2,000 fans, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw.
As 11 Augsburg first-team players are off away on international duty, FCA head coach Sandro Wagner named a starting XI comprised of a mix of senior players as well as three U19 talents – Pirmin Reinheimer, Milo Adleff and Tim Schnitzer – and Franz Xaver Bleicher from the U23s. Anton Kade also got his first opportunity to start for FCA.
Kick-off was initially a little delayed, as the ball was too flat to begin the match on time. Eventually, though, the game developed into an intense and energetic encounter – in the 15th minute of play, Philip Tietz, acting as captain in the absence of Jeffrey Gouweleeuw and Kristijan Jakić, fired home a low driven effort to give FCA a deserved lead. Ulm’s keeper Christian Ortag was powerless to stop the well-struck shot.
Augsburg continued to threaten after the opening goal, particularly when driving down the wings. Nediljko Labrović was likewise impressive between the sticks for FCA and on two occasions managed to deny Ulm an equaliser by saving long-distance attempts (22’, 33’). Shortly before the break, however, the visitors were able to showcase their quality. After an attractive piece of build-up from the third-division side, Lucas Röser neatly tucked away a finish to make the game all square once again (39’).
After the teams ran out for the second 45, the Augsburg XI was mostly unchanged from head coach Sandro Wagner’s starting line-up. The floodlights ensured an atmospheric feel for the remainder of the game, and with the pitch becoming increasingly difficult to play on, a lot was demanded of the FCA players. The Fuggerstädter had a stroke of luck in the 63rd minute, as an own goal was only narrowly prevented from giving Ulm the lead. Going forward, the substitute David Dreo saw his shot blocked in the 74th minute.
As the match went on, Wagner took the opportunity to give valuable minutes to more FCA academy talents. As the game drew to a close, U19 player Paul Wolf made his presence known in the game, with his left-footed effort only narrowly firing wide of Ulm’s goal. Despite further attacking efforts from both sides, the final whistle eventually blew to confirm the 1-1 scoreline on the night
