Fabian Rieder was the last of FCA’s World Cup contingent to return to the squad when he linked back up with the team on Monday. The midfielder reached the quarter-finals with Switzerland at the World Cup in the USA, where they were knocked out by Argentina. At the training camp in Achenkirch, he spoke about…
…Switzerland’s World Cup campaign: “Going out like that obviously hurts, and you’re very disappointed at first. But once we take a step back and reflect on the tournament, we can’t have too many complaints. We had a really good World Cup, performed strongly and showed what we’re capable of. Ultimately, the overwhelming feeling is one of pride.”
…his own tournament: “It’s always incredibly special to be involved in a major tournament like that and represent your country. It was my second World Cup, and my role was different this time compared to the last one. I played more minutes and had a different standing within the team. Of course, I would have liked to come away with a goal or an assist as well. Nevertheless, I think I had a good tournament overall and was able to show my qualities on several occasions.”
…returning to FCA: “I feel extremely fit and can get straight back into things without any problems. I’m already fully integrated again and feel mentally refreshed. The holiday was obviously important to recover and recharge so that I can give everything for the team again. I’ve also come back with plenty of confidence, which grows with every game you play. At the same time, I still see potential that I want to fulfil and areas in which I can continue to develop.”
…his current situation in Augsburg: “I feel incredibly comfortable here and am very happy to be at the club. I’m now looking forward to getting fully involved in pre-season and having a good campaign together with FCA. I want to prove myself as a leader here, and I feel Augsburg is the perfect environment for me to do that.”
…FCA’s targets: “There is enormous potential in this squad, and we want to build on that and keep improving. Our aim has to be to get better from one game to the next. We want other teams to know that they will have to be at their absolute best to get a result against us. Although we want to stay humble, that is the level of confidence we need to take into every game.”
