DFB-Pokal winner and playmaker: Rieder in focus

Back in the Bundesliga

Fabian Rieder has returned to the Bundesliga and wants to give his all for FC Augsburg – hopefully sooner rather than later.

Born 16th February 2002 in Koppigen, Rieder came through as a youth product at Young Boys and quickly emerged as promising talent in Bern. He made his first appearance for the first team whilst still in his teenage years and was able to celebrate three championships as well as a cup win. The midfielder moved to French side Rennes in 2023, before joining VfB Stuttgart on loan at the start of 2024.

Rieder was part of the DFB-Pokal-winning Stuttgart side last summer and gained a wealth of experience in both the Bundesliga as well as in the Champions League – including appearances against European giants like Real Madrid, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain. All in all, he made 33 competitive appearances for VfB, scoring twice and assisting seven goals along the way. Rieder’s versatility, evident in his ability to run out in central midfield or on the wing, define his profile as a player, as well as his strong left foot, his threat from set-pieces and his incredible stamina.

Rieder has signed a long-term contract until 2030 at FC Augsburg. The Switzerland international sees the team as the perfect place to continue his development. “FC Augsburg is a top club with a strong squad. The staff here are fantastic and the coaching team is great; personally, I think it’s a great fit for me.” The midfielder will be reunited with an old friend from his time in Bern, Cedric Zesiger, with whom he remains in good contact.

Key performer for the Switzerland national team

However, Rieder’s footballing journey has been far from smooth sailing. At only 11 years old, he lost his father. The support Rieder received from his mother was therefore of special importance for the midfielder. “She was always there for us and was constantly with me through the ups and downs,” emphasised Rieder, whose sister still lives in their hometown. Together with his girlfriend, the 23-year-old is now hoping to find a new home in Augsburg.

Rieder has long been a mainstay in the Switzerland national team, having made 19 international appearances and scored one goal. At the age of just 20, he made his debut at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. At the EUROs in 2024, he started the match against Germany in the group stages as well as in every knockout tie as Switzerland impressed in the tournament, ultimately suffering an unlucky quarter-final defeat to England.

Rieder has again been called up by his national team for the current international break, and is hoping to make a flying start to life in Augsburg upon his return. “I’m aiming to help the club finish as high in the table as we possibly can, and I want to contribute a lot to the team in this respect. I hope I can get some minutes in the first game back against St. Pauli.”
