Claude-Maurice: “We made too many mistakes”
The reaction to the defeat against Stuttgart
On matchday 27 of the Bundesliga season, VfB Stuttgart brought FC Augsburg’s unbeaten streak at home to an end. Read all the post-match reaction to the 5-2 loss on Sunday evening here.
Fabian Rieder: “Losing 5-2 obviously hurts, especially after eight games unbeaten. We simply weren’t good enough defensively – that was the case from start to end. Far too often, we were half a second too slow, and each of the five goals could’ve been prevented on a better day. We lacked the necessary concentration today. Now, it’s a case of forgetting about this and putting in a better performance against HSV in two weeks’ time.”
Keven Schlotterbeck: “Conceding five goals is a disaster – you can’t win Bundesliga matches like that. A couple of weeks ago, I said that the job’s not done yet. We still need points to stay up – we’ve still got to keep an eye on the teams below us. At the end of the day, though, we’ve got to walk the walk, not just talk the talk. There’s nothing else to be done but pick up points. The important thing is to keep things tight at the back and defend as a team.”
Michael Gregoritsch: “We were actually well-prepared and had a clear plan, but today we didn’t manage to implement it. We simply conceded too many preventable goals – that shouldn’t happen to us. The second half was more like the way that we want to play as FCA. Ultimately, it wasn’t enough. From a points perspective, February was good, but we haven’t picked up enough against very good opponents. Now, we’ve got to analyse it and work on things.”
Finn Dahmen: “We started badly and had problems at the back. In the first half, we didn’t tackle well enough and didn’t show the right mentality. After the break, our body language and attitude were better, as you’d expect of us. Still, we continued to make too many basic mistakes, and that’s exactly what we’ve got to work on urgently and turn things around quickly.”
Alexis Claude-Maurice: “We’re disappointed because we know that we can be better. We made too many mistakes – Stuttgart were the better team today and clinically put us to the sword. The last few games against top teams have showed that we can essentially go toe-to-toe with any team but, in order to do so, we’ve got to keep our mistakes to a minimum. Now, it’s all about reviewing the game and coming back stronger after the international break.”
Manuel Baum (FC Augsburg head coach): “Kudos to Stuttgart. We defended badly today – that’s something we can clearly improve on. We deserved to trail by as much as we did, which is why we had to step up our game in the second half and tried to inject impetus into the game. But Stuttgart played very well – for long stretches of the game, we didn’t put up enough of a fight and we need to re-establish defensive solidity quickly.”
Sebastian Hoeneß (VfB Stuttgart head coach): “I want to praise my team. After our game in the week, performing like this today is really impressive. The key was staying focussed over the whole 90 minutes and being very clinical. We used our chances well and managed to establish a healthy advantage by half-time. It was clear to us that Augsburg would come back and that, on the whole, it would be tough here today. As a result, we’re even happier with the win.”
