Baum: “Know that there’s still room for improvement”

Match reaction following 2-0 win in Cottbus

First Team 22.08.2026, 16:17

FC Augsburg opened their DFB-Pokal campaign with a 2-0 win against FC Energie Cottbus. Read on for all the post-match reaction to today’s game.

Anton Kade: “There wasn’t a clear difference in quality to be seen between the two sides over the course of the 90 minutes – mainly in individual moments. Cottbus demanded everything of us. The atmosphere in the stadium was also fantastic, and made it a lot of fun to play here. I’m happy to have won the Man of the Match award for the first time, because I was able to help the team by opening the scoring. I found myself with a bit of space and could have laid it off, but I felt good and was able to find the back of the net.”

Keven Schlotterbeck: “It was an extremely tough game. It was important that we came back from the half-time break and managed to make it 1-0. The next 40 minutes were tricky, as Cottbus put us under a lot of pressure. We could have done better to finish our counter-attacks, but in the end, it’s about managing to win games like this, which is exactly what we did. Next, we have a tough home game coming up against Schalke. They will be coming into the game with a lot of energy and euphoria. We will take the experience from today’s game with us, will learn from our mistakes and will work hard this week in order to take all three points at home.”

Manuel Baum (FC Augsburg head coach): “We’re happy to have won the game, because it went the way we had expected it to. Cottbus put in a brave performance and we struggled to defend against them. Taking a 1-0 lead right after the break was extremely important. It’s too bad that we didn’t manage to add a second earlier. Kudos to Cottbus for their performance and the atmosphere in the stadium. We know that there’s still room for improvement and that we have to be much better against Schalke next week.”

Claus-Dieter Wollitz (FC Energie Cottbus head coach): “We didn’t give up many chances in the first half. We had some good moments in transition, but didn’t take them. At half time we spoke about the fact that the next 15 minutes would be key, depending if we continued to press or if we became too passive. We didn’t defend well on the goal. The next 10 minutes then saw us have several good chances. Following that, we weren’t able to have the right balance between attack and defence and could have even conceded on the counter-attack then. It was a hard-fought cup match, but there were clear signs as to why the result was the way it is.”
