Baum: "We will analyse the individual mistakes"

First Team 15.09.2018, 22:28
Despite leading 1-0 in the closing stages of the match, FC Augsburg have fallen to a 2-1 away defeat to 1. FSV Mainz 05. “It’s a real shame that we couldn’t close out the match today,” said FCA coach Manuel Baum as he summarised his thoughts from today’s game. Here are thoughts of the players and coaches after today’s match. Martin Hinteregger: “It was a defeat that we shouldn’t have suffered, especially because we took the lead so late on and we couldn’t close out the match. No-one is blaming the defeat on Fabian Giefer because it was a team performance. There was a clear foul on me before the second Mainz goal, so I don’t think their goal should’ve counted.” André Hahn: “The closing stage of the match was crazy and it sadly ended with the wrong outcome for us. Nothing went right for us in the final five minutes or so. We took the lead and our goalscorer, Dong-Won Ji, got injured. Then we conceded two goals from set pieces, the second of which came after a clear foul on Martin Hinteregger.” Philipp Max: “Today’s match was highly contested and we conceded two poor goals. It is often the case that the team who score first go on to win the match but that wasn’t the case today. It’s also a shame to lose a potential point based on a wrong decision. We are very disappointed about that decision.” Fabian Giefer: “I came out to clear the ball and I didn’t succeed in either situation. I am incredibly sorry to the team, who gave everything they had to win today. It is a bitter pill to take but we must hold our heads high and shake off today’s result.” Manuel Baum: “We started today’s match very well and scored early on, although the goal didn’t count due to offside. We lost our way a little bit after that. We defended well in the second half and took the lead in the 82nd minute. It is a real shame that we couldn’t close out the match in the final minutes, especially because both goals came from set plays. I have no idea what the referee was thinking regarding the second goal as there was a clear foul on Martin Hinteregger. The fact that Hinteregger couldn’t return to the game after receiving treatment is also inexplicable in my opinion, although the linesman had agreed for it to take place. For all the referee’s mistakes, we must also analyse our mistakes and we will do this in the forthcoming days.” Mainz coach Sandro Schwarz: “We struggle to get into today’s match with Augsburg dominating the opening 20 minutes. We had a good spell for the rest of the first half, in which we could’ve taken the lead. Duels up and down the pitch characterised the second half and we conceded an unlucky goal. However, what the team then showed was remarkable. We’ve had to overcome a lot recently, especially injuries. Therefore, we are very pleased to have won today.”
