Manuel Baum: “We didn’t deserve to lose”

First Team 05.05.2018, 20:30
FC Augsburg couldn’t quite make an impressive performance pay off in their final home outing of the season. Read all the reaction to the 2-1 loss to Schalke here. Michael Gregoritsch: “We wanted to have a good send-off for our fans, but we just didn’t make use of our chances enough to be able to do that. If you take the whole game into account though, I think that we deserved a point at the least.” Philipp Max: “We deserved to come away with more today, but unfortunately our huge effort went unrewarded. We tried everything towards the end, but nothing went our way.. It’s a shame that the first goal was allowed to stand after Kehrer was in an offside position. The loss is hard to take.” Daniel Baier: “I’m really happy with how the season has gone, because we managed to secure our safety and get to 40 points well before the end of the season. The first half of the campaign went extremely well and in the second half we had to fight through a few problems, especially with injuries. Ups and downs are normal though and we managed to finish strongly. I’m proud of our team.” Marwin Hitz: “We have to settle for an unfortunate loss today. It’s a shame, because I really wanted my final game in front of our home fans to end with all three points. The fans prepared a brilliant send-off for me nevertheless. I’ve made some great memories here in Augsburg, but I feel like now is the time to pursue new challenges. It was a weird feeling going into the game, because I was excited to venture into the unknown.” Manuel Baum: “We wanted two things going into the game: a passionate performance and all three points. We wore the shirt with pride today, but unfortunately we couldn’t get the win. In my eyes we were the better team over the 90 minutes. Both goals came from set-pieces, and I’m not sure why the first wasn’t looked at by the guys in Cologne. We also should have had a penalty due to handball. We’ve shown today and last week against Schalke that we weren’t going to stop fighting, despite having already secured our safety. Now we want to end the season on a high in Freiburg.” Domenico Tedesco: “There were highs and lows today and both sides fought with a lot of heart and passion. It wasn’t easy for us, because Augsburg have a lot of players that are hungry to prove themselves. We defended well and scored two goals, which carried us to victory. We’re happy that we could give the fans another win and end the season in second place.”
