April: Back-to-back wins for FCA

Year in review 2022, Part four

Club 22.12.2022, 09:07

An emotional 12 months full of highs and lows are drawing to a close. As we enter the last few weeks of the year, FC Augsburg are looking back on the last 365 days. In the fourth part of our series, we look at April.

The month began with a welcome decision from the Bavarian state government, as they announced the lifting of various Covid-19 restrictions, including the mask mandate inside stadiums.

The new rules were in effect for the home game against VfL Wolfsburg, as FC Augsburg picked up an important three points in the race to secure safety. The hosts took the lead after just 50 seconds, with Iago netting the opener. After the break, Florian Niederlechner added a second before Mads Pedersen smashed a shot in under the crossbar to secure a 3-0 win against the Wolves.

Vargas comes off the bench and scores

A few days later, Augsburg were able to celebrate once more as they came out on top against Mainz 05, after the game has previously been rescheduled to mid-week. It was the first time that FCA had won back-to-back games all season. Jeffrey Gouweleeuw put Augsburg ahead from the spot, with the Zerofivers managing to equalise after the break. Ruben Vargas was the hero for FCA, as he came off the bench and netted the winner to establish a six-point lead over the relegation play-off spot.

The double game week came to an end away against FC Bayern München. Despite putting up a good fight, FCA fell to a 1-0 defeat after the record champions were awarded a penalty for a handball.

FCA plant trees, fan pub reopens

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw, Arne Maier, Fredrik Jensen, Ruben Vargas and head coach Markus Weinzierl also participated in an off the pitch initiative in April, as they helped plant 300 trees as part of the FCA Forest project together with club members, fan club representatives, club executives and committee members. The forest is located between Wertach and Singold, not far from the WWK ARENA, with plans for it to become a mixed-growth forest of nearly 20,000 trees over the coming years.

With Easter around the corner, FC Augsburg suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat against Hertha BSC. The match marked the first time that the fan pub at the WWK ARENA was able to reopen since it was forced to close due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Like in the pre-pandemic days, fans were now able to watch all FCA away games at the pub once again.

The following away game was reason to celebrate once again in Augsburg, as Weinzierl’s side won 2-0 in Bochum. Goals from André Hahn and Michael Gregoritsch had the visitors leading at the break as they went on to secure an important victory on the road. At home the next weekend, FCA were handed a heavy 4-1 defeat at the hands of Köln, as they missed the chance to secure safety with two matchdays left to play.
