FCA fall to heavy 4-1 defeat against Köln

Iago taken off injured - Niederlechner's goal comes too late

First Team 30.04.2022, 17:33

FC Augsburg suffered a heavy defeat to 1. FC Köln in their penultimate home game of the season, losing 4-1. A quickfire double put the guests on course for victory, as FCA were unable to mount a comeback.

Head coach Markus Weinzierl went with an unchanged XI following last weekend's 2-0 win in Bochum.

FCA started well and recorded their first chance early on, as Michael Gregoritsch's header was easily saved (6'). The guests then went down the other end and opened the scoring, as Benno Schmitz cut it back to Jan Thielmann, who tapped in to put Köln 1-0 up (12'). Just three minutes later, Köln were celebrating their second of the match, as Mark Uth's shot was turned in by the post (15').

The guests could have increased their lead in the minutes that followed, as Anthony Modeste sent a header over the bar (21'). Rafał Gikiewicz then made two strong saves to deny Jonas Hector (23') and Modeste (26'). It took until the end of the half for FCA to begin recording chances of their own again, as both Gregoritsch (30') and Iago missed the target (35').

Niederlechner gets one back

The second half got off to a bad start for the hosts, as Iago suffered a serious injury and had to be stretchered off. The injury occurred with no outside influence, as Felix Uduokhai was brought on to replace the Brazilian (50'). Later, Jeffery Goueleeuw brought down Modeste in the box, as referee Robert Schröder pointed to the spot. Modeste stepped up to take the spot-kick, and coolly converted it (63').

After a long ball from Arne Maier, Florian Niederlechner broke through on goal and poked the ball past Marvin Schwäbe to get one back for the hosts (73'). However, it was too little, too late for FCA as Köln scored on the counter shortly after. Uth squared it to Modeste, with the Frenchman netting his second of the game to make it 4-1 (77'). Despite chances from Maier (80'), Niederlechner (83'), Modeste (88') and Louis Schaub (90'), there would be no more goals for either side as the referee blew the final whistle.

With two games left to play, FCA are currently six points ahead of the relegation zone. A draw against RB Leipzig next Sunday (8th May, 19:30 CEST) would be enough for Augsburg to secure safety.
