FC Augsburg were unable to come away from their trip to Eintracht Frankfurt with any points, falling to a narrow 1-0 defeat against the Eagles. Two tight VAR decisions in favour of the hosts denied FCA what would have been a deserved point.
Interim head coach Manuel Baum named an unchanged starting line-up following last weekend’s 2-0 win at home against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Phillip Tietz missed out due to a back injury.
FCA started brightly and thought they had managed to take the lead through Chrislain Matsima’s header just four minutes in. However, the goal was then chalked off due to an offside call. Baum’s side quickly shook off the setback and continued to wait for opportunities to arise on the counter, while also putting up a resolute performance in defence to keep Frankfurt at bay.
The hosts began to see more of the ball as time went on, but weren’t able to turn this into any clear chances on goal. Goalkeeper Finn Dahmen was able to parry the handful of chances that Frankfurt mustered without too much difficulty. At the other end, Robin Fellhauer did well to get past his opponent with the help of his back-heel, but saw his shot blocked at the last second (54’).
FCA denied an equaliser after another close decision
Frankfurt were able to break the deadlock in the 68th minute, as Ritsu Doan beat his marker and released a shot that took a deflection before trickling into the back of the net. The hosts then sat back and defended, while FCA sought to bring on fresh legs in an attempt to find a way back into the game.
Noahkai Banks appeared to have gotten a crucial equaliser for FCA late on, but his header was later disallowed after another close offside call by the VAR. Shortly after, Keven Schlotterbeck was unfortunate to not hit the target after finding himself in a good position (90’+2), with Samuel Essende also unable to find a way through from range (90’+6). In the end, FCA were left empty-handed after a match in which they would have deserved to take a point from.
Next weekend, FCA will welcome SV Werder Bremen to the WWK ARENA for their final home game of the year on Saturday, 20th December (15:30 CET).
