Weinzierl: “We were positive and courageous”

Reaction to Sunday’s home win over Wolfsburg

First Team 03.04.2022, 18:48

FCA secured three huge points towards Bundesliga survival on Sunday with a 3-0 home win over VfL Wolfsburg. “We put in a good performance and deserved to win the game,” said a delighted Markus Weinzierl. We gathered all the post-match reaction.

Mads Pedersen: “There were a lot of positives today. We executed our game plan perfectly. We were confident, we were compact at the back, and we used the space well. Obviously, the decisive factor was that we took our chances. I’m delighted that I was able to help the team not only by working hard, but also by getting on the scoresheet. We have to throw everything at it once again against Mainz on Wednesday.”

Ricardo Pepi: “We played really well today. Our fans were amazing and really pushed us forward. We’re over the moon to get the three points, but now our focus is on the next crucial game in midweek against Mainz and we’re determined to follow up today’s result.”

Florian Niederlechner: “I have said many times just how important the fans are. A decisive factor is missing without them. They roared us on from the very start – and you can’t really start any better than we did. Wolfsburg didn’t play badly, but we were more clinical. That’s exactly how you need to play at home when you’re in the relegation battle. We have to take confidence from this for Wednesday now. If we play there just like we did today, we will win that game as well.”

Markus Weinzierl: “We put in a good performance and deserved to win the game. We were positive, courageous, and chased the ball with lots of intensity. We started the game well and brilliantly added the second and third goals in the second half. The lads play with more freedom and more heart with the fans behind them and that’s what made the difference today. Even though we are missing players, we still have a good team and I think today is testament to that. Nevertheless, it’s been a difficult season for a number of reasons with our fair share of setbacks. I think you saw today what role the fans play.”

Jörg Schmadtke: “We didn’t start the game well at all. We were able to work some spaces after that, but not the way we had planned. We weren’t that solid defensively; we didn’t clear enough danger and didn’t put our opponents under enough pressure. We were second-best in the penalty area today and that’s why it’s a deserved result.”
