Jeffrey Gouweleeuw has become FC Augsburg’s outright record appearance holder in the Bundesliga. The Dutchman came off the bench early in the 1-1 draw against 1. FC Union Berlin at the WWK ARENA to make his 275th top-flight appearance for FCA, moving ahead of Daniel Baier, who played 274 Bundesliga games for the club.

The 35-year-old joined Augsburg from Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in January 2016 and has been a mainstay of the FCA defence ever since. The captain signed a one-year contract extension in January 2026, committing his future to the club until 30th June 2027.

FCA CEO Michael Ströll paid tribute to Gouweleeuw’s achievement: “Playing 275 Bundesliga games for FC Augsburg is an outstanding achievement. Jeff has earned this record through years of consistency, professionalism and dedication. Becoming the club’s outright record appearance holder is something he can be incredibly proud of.”

Gouweleeuw was understandably proud and emotional after reaching the milestone, saying: “This record means a lot to me. It’s something I’ve been aiming for for a long time.” The Dutchman was particularly pleased to be able to celebrate the occasion with his loved ones: “Augsburg has become my home, and the stadium feels like a second home to me. There aren’t many players these days who spend this long at one club.”

Despite his personal achievement, Gouweleeuw was quick to stress that the team always comes first: “Of course, I’d have been even happier if we’d won the game. At the end of the day, the team’s success will always matter more than any individual achievement.”
