Post-match reactions after the Freiburg defeat
FCA lost 3-0 away to SC Freiburg on Sunday. “We were compact and aggressive in recent games, which wasn’t the case at all today,” criticised coach Markus Weinzierl after the game.
Rafał Gikiewicz: “We have to play football from the first minute; we can’t begin to from the 46th. We weren’t at the races at all in the first half, we were simply too passive. Conceding three goals in the first half an hour obviously really hurts you. We did better after switching things up for the second half, but Freiburg were still deserved winners.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “Going behind so early on was disappointing. We then had the chance to equalise, but didn’t take it. After that, we suffered two more setbacks, which we never recovered from. We didn’t get stuck in at all and had no control of the game. Everybody knows that we’ll have to massively improve against Dortmund – and we will.”
Florian Niederlechner: “We know what to expect here in Freiburg. However, we didn’t get going and falling 1-0 behind early on really hurt us. I can’t explain why we didn’t play well after that. Freiburg’s win was fully deserved, you can’t have success away from home if you play like that. The only positive was that we didn’t completely fall apart in the second half.”
Markus Weinzierl: “We were asleep for the first part of the game, were too passive, didn’t run hard enough and failed to get stuck in. The second half was better after the changes, but it was too late. We were compact and aggressive in recent games, which wasn’t the case at all today. Freiburg’s tactics were spot on and they deserved to win. We now need to show a different side to us in Dortmund.”
Christian Streich: “It was an emotional week, where we have only focused on the game. The lads were brilliant, not just defensively but also when we won the ball back. We were really good in possession today as well. Augsburg made changes for the second half and that made it harder for us, though we still took control again. It’s great to have delivered such a great game and a win for our fans in the final match here.”
