FCA suffer 5-2 defeat in Leipzig

A disappointing afternoon

First Team 07.11.2026, 17:31

FC Augsburg suffered a heavy 5-2 defeat away to RB Leipzig on Saturday afternoon. After a promising start, FCA gradually lost their grip on the game, and even an improved second-half performance was not enough to prevent defeat.

FCA head coach Manuel Baum made one change to his starting line-up following the home game against SC Freiburg, with Rodrigo Ribeiro replacing Michael Gregoritsch, who had been unable to train fully during the week due to a cold. Augsburg were also without several players, including centre-backs Juma Bah, Calvin Brackelmann and Noahkai Banks.

Quickfire Leipzig double turns the game around

Augsburg started brightly and opened the scoring after just 38 seconds. Arijon Ibrahimović had an effort on goal and Anton Kade was on hand to tuck away the rebound and give FCA an early lead. However, the hosts gradually took control and began putting the Augsburg defence under pressure. Goalkeeper Finn Dahmen was called into action on several occasions, notably denying David Raum in the 20th minute.

Just over half an hour into the game, Augsburg found themselves behind after conceding twice in quick succession. Ezechiel Banzuzi levelled the score with a well-placed finish (34’), before Christopher Nkunku completed the turnaround just a minute later (35’). FCA struggled to regain their rhythm or relieve the pressure after that, and Raum made it 3-1 with a free-kick shortly before half time (45’+1).

Improved second-half display not enough

Augsburg came out with much more intent after the break. The introduction of Alexis Claude-Maurice, who replaced Ibrahimović at half time, made FCA more dangerous going forward and helped them create several good chances. Anton Kade was played through brilliantly by Claude-Maurice but was denied by Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt (50’). Kade then went close again with a shot on the turn (58’).

FCA looked capable of pulling a goal back during this spell but failed to make their chances count. Instead, it was Leipzig who struck again, with Rômulo finishing off an attacking move to make it 4-1 (60’). Just six minutes later, substitute Christoph Baumgartner added a fifth (66’). Those two goals took the wind out of Augsburg’s sails and effectively ended any hopes of a comeback.

Augsburg continued to look for opportunities going forward in the closing stages. Kade was denied once again by Vandevoordt (68’) before having a goal ruled out for offside (86’). Deep into stoppage time, substitute Uchenna Ogundu scored his first Bundesliga goal to make the final score 5-2 (90’+2).

The Bundesliga takes a break next weekend for the international fixtures. FCA return to action on Sunday, 22nd November, when they host 1. FSV Mainz 05 at the WWK ARENA.
