Reaction to the defeat in Stuttgart
Despite leading twice, FC Augsburg suffered a 3-2 loss away to VfB Stuttgart and went home empty handed. “We didn’t have enough possession and that meant we couldn’t get out of our own half,” said Markus Weinzierl after the game. Read on for all the match reaction.
Daniel Caligiuri: “Our second half performance meant that we didn’t deserve to win the game. It looked as if we were scared of making mistakes. We did well in the first half, but after the break we simply didn’t do enough.”
Reece Oxford: “Against Bielefeld we won a tight game against a direct opponent, but despite having the lead twice we didn’t have that today. We didn’t do well enough in the second half; we didn’t play the ball forward anymore.”
André Hahn: “Especially in the first half, we were compact at the back, but not precise enough going forward. When you lead a game twice you absolutely have to take something out of it. We’re no strangers to our situation though, and we have to show what we can do after the international break.”
Markus Weinzierl: “It’s a tough defeat to take because we led twice and we should’ve taken at least a point. We conceded three goals from set pieces because we defended far too deeply. You had the feeling that we showed our opponents too much respect after we took the lead to win the game. We didn’t have enough possession and therefore couldn’t relieve the pressure. We didn’t take enough risks and didn’t have enough of a presence in our opponents half.”
Pellegrino Matarazzo: “We started the game well and had a couple of chances but Augsburg scored with their first opportunity. We had to work hard, not least because after our equaliser we conceded again straight away. In the second half you could see that the team was lively and that we wanted it badly. I am delighted that the lads were rewarded for their efforts.”
