Wolfsburg match reaction
Despite a good performance, FC Augsburg suffered a 1-0 defeat away at VfL Wolfsburg. “You don’t normally get as many chances as we did in the second half against a team that is playing Champions League football,” analysed head coach Markus Weinzierl. Read on for his and others’ match reaction.
Niklas Dorsch: “I’m really disappointed that we didn’t take anything from the game. We had another poor start and I don’t understand why we always seem to need to concede a goal to get going. We need to remedy that and play aggressively from the off. The second half was a lot better and we had a few chances to equalise. We deserved at least a point.”
Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “We gave Wolfsburg too much room in the first half and didn’t put them under enough pressure. They had too much time building up play and we didn’t defend well enough. You could see that we did better later on and did manage to put them under pressure. That’s when we had our chances. Now we have to use the international break for some intense work.”
André Hahn: “It’s annoying to come away empty-handed. Wolfsburg were better in the first half and took the lead. But in the second half we played better, were more physical and created chances. I think we could have taken a point.”
Markus Weinzierl: “You don’t normally get as many chances as we did in the second half against a team that is playing Champions League football. Unfortunately we didn’t make the most of them. Therefore, I’m frustrated we didn’t get anything from the game. We’ll work on things and try to play like we did in the second 45’ for the full 90 minutes. If we don’t manage that we’ll have problems.”
Florian Kohfeldt: “The performance in the first half was probably the best I’ve seen since getting here. We could have been further ahead at the break. In the second half we let Augsburg have a few opportunities as there were a few gaps in the team. An equaliser probably would have been deserved. But our mentality was good and we managed to hold on for the win.”
