Weinzierl: “We were really smart tactically today”

Reaction to the draw against Dortmund

First Team 27.02.2022, 20:59

Sunday evening saw FC Augsburg take a well-earned point at home to Borussia Dortmund, drawing 1-1. “We started taking risks towards the end, brought on fresh legs and that got us the equaliser,” said head coach Markus Weinzierl, delighted. Read on for all reaction to the draw against BVB.

Rafał Gikiewicz: “We’re happy with the point, but we definitely would have preferred three given the situation we’re in. Nevertheless, we’re going to go into the Bielefeld game with a spring in our step, looking to make another step towards survival there. I’m over the moon for Noah, who scored a really important goal today.”

Florian Niederlechner: “We got a lot of energy in attack when Noah came on. It was important that we were able to come back against such a good team once again. At the end of the day, the draw was more than good value, and against a team like Dortmund we can count it as a point we didn’t think we might get.”

Jeffrey Gouweleeuw: “In the first half we weren’t able to do quite as well as we thought we would, but after the break, I think we showed a much better performance. We actually thought we could take a win, but we’re more than happy with the point.”

Ricardo Pepi: “Dortmund are a really strong team, but we held our own against them and gave our all as a team. I’m really happy that I could start the game. The equaliser gave the team a reward for the huge effort they put in through the second half.”

Reece Oxford: “We had a lot of pressure on us before the game and we really wanted to take a win, but at the end of the day we’re more than happy with a point. It was a well-earned draw, but we’re still under pressure and we want to get something out of the trip to Bielefeld.”

Noah Sarenren Bazee: “The team showed a huge amount of character today. When you’re 1-0 down, you know that you can still come back. I’m very happy that we got our reward today, for the whole team. It does feel a bit like a win, but we still need to keep working and we can’t relax with this point. Of course, I’m also delighted to have scored a goal once again.”

Markus Weinzierl: “We put in a good shift and earned a point. We went behind to a wonderful goal from Dortmund – it’s really difficult to defend against that kind of quality, but We were really tactically smart today and did well for long periods. The start of the second half wasn’t too good, but we improved with the substitutions. We started taking risks towards the end, brought on fresh legs and that got us the equaliser – we’re very happy with the performance.”

Marco Rose: “We’re disappointed with this result. We had control of the game for a long time, were dominant, and the lead was good value for the performance. It was clear though that Augsburg came back into the game and brought on fresh legs. Maybe we missed a few things during the week. We had to hit back in the period when Augsburg started taking more risks, but we weren’t good enough. It was pretty chaotic at the back once again, and at the end of the day, a point is what we deserved.”
